Artist's Comments

When I exhibited this piece at the Church of Art in Norwich I met a woman called Jacky. Heres a summary of how she interpreted the piece...
'The picture shows the soul ascention process. The flower symbolises the last image a person may see when they leave their physical body and could be what they hold onto when they enter the next realm. They may not yet accept that they have left this world behind. The figures on the rocks are in the movement of going towards the next stage whereas the figures resting in the village are content with their present position. The Knight to the top left is trying to communicate to those still on this earth but the layered barriers are proving an obstacle. Whereas the lighthouse is shining a light on those of us still here and attempting to make the journey more clear. The blue light in the centre is tempting the souls into the possible harmony whereas the mechanism to the bottom left is sucking them into the abyss of the unknown'.

amazing... you have a way with colors... quite stunning
:iconnytram1982:
awesome dude... very trippy, uve obviously experienced of lot of the unconscious... u ever tried automotism?
:icondanpurcell:
cheers. ive only experienced the unconscious in terms of visual stimuli in lucid dreams, meditation, astral travelling, stuff i read and a bit of this and that although if i remember it it cant be that unconscious? in terms of automatism, if u mean in art i used to do all my pieces spontaneously including half of this one i think. i find that hard now, probably because i want to improve my work and i reckon planning helps that and also because my heads the least fuzzy its been for a while. thanks for adding lava to ur favourites.

i had a seminar the other week on automotism. a lot of surrealists experimented with it... its using the affects of drugs / alcohol / hypnotherapy to try and regain the spotinuity of ones work, helping to keep it free and loose, i completely understand where u r coming from about the fact that it is actually impossible to switch off completely from concentrating and u do have to plan something, as the artist is always going to be the person who carries out the physical action required to make marks / create an illusion of something. (if u get were i'm coming from)!!!

it sounds like u do an interesting course. ive got a good book called altered states: creativity under the influence which talks of that sort of thing. im sometimes tempted to have periods of being high and wasted for art as the compositions would definately flow faster. what holds me back is that i dont intend to be an 'artist' for a career and it would be hard to get a 9-5 permanently fucked altho some people i know seem to manage it fine..

i couldnt agree more... i know a lot of people who have tried it and can get away with it, but i certainly couldnt! who's the author of this book? it sounds really interesting and i may have to check it out. i c u r at norwich uni and u have a show coming up... is that an end of year show / a personal one? may be interesting to pop up and have a look around as i have a couple of friends at norwich uni.
cheers,

James Hughes is the author/or collaborator depending how u see it. i definately recommend it. its the best art related book ive read. ive looked at it loads and each time i find something new (its got lots of pictures as well). Its got everything about anything to do with creativity in it (Shamanism, music, dreamwork, jungian/transpersonal psychology, madness, drugs, mystics, the future of creativity etc). its a group show at norwich. at the mo theres only two of us but im sure there will be more once the posters go up. norwich uni hasnt got an art course as theres a seperate art college. id definately come to the exhibition (but i may be biased). im probably going to bring 4 pieces (big versions of [link], Jungle and lava and a a3 cyclops). if u know any artists in norwich tell them to look out for it!?.

The subject of various flowing energies is quite hard to visualise. You did it quite well, using so many forms and shapes of expressed energy.

I firmly believe that the novel "Inquilibrium: Behind the Curtain of Life" I'm writing for 4 years now is going to be one of the most life-transforming, hope-giving, insight-bearing book you'll ever read. All I ask of you is to remember me and its title.
